Micks top ten paintings

This is a chronological list that spot-lights important paintings in my artistic growth - as selected by me, Mick Tilman...

A Live Snapping Turtle Is Land - 1994 - 18" x 24" - this painting is one of my first "serious" paintings - I combined early infulences of Aboriginal Art and the Group of Seven - these are my Tom Thomson Trees.  I also like the idea of 'mythical' creation in this image...

Scream (Sunflowers) - 1995 - 18" x 24" this painting was influenced by my good friend Randy and his devotion to his Sunflowers - this is my first highly fragmented piece - that emphasizes my early signature style.  I was also able to let loose in the centre of these flowers and do a Van Gogh-esque middle bit...

Image of confidefrogs.jpg

Confide Frogs - 1996 - 12" x 15" - this painting shows my developed fragmentation style - it is quite confident in this one - the placement of shapes is wonderful in this peice as well as the negative space.  Although this is a simple theme it seems to transcend beyond just a few frogs for me...

Image of oldtex650.jpg

Old Tex - 1996 - 18" x 22" - this painting illustrates my fascination of the bison - I must have created about a dozen bison paintings from 95-97 - this one may be the best - with the most character and a great unit... It also shows my use of symbols in my fragmentation - I began developing an affection for stars, comets and sunbursts around this era.  This image also has a fair amount of script in it.  I was not afraid to put writing in my work - I was often criticized for my use of text.  The story of Old Tex a bull that was killed due to fear of mating with the local cows, was a story I found intriguing...

Image of cobwebs-sm.jpg

As if it were nothing but Cobwebs - 1996 - 18" x 24" - This painting was influenced by my readings on the emergence of the Railroad and its effects on the Bison population - this painting was bought by my Canadian Visual Images - University Prof.      The quote is as follows:

It has only one path on which it travels, coming and going.  So why not set a snare to capture it.  They drove stout stakes in the ground on either side of the track and wove strong lariats from stake to stake, until they were satisfied.  They retired some distance and hid behind the tall sage brush to await developments.  They were eager to spring into action as soon as the monster was caught in the coils of the snare, but they could hardly believe their eyes when the monster cut through the snare AS IF IT WERE NOTHING BUT COBWEBS.  (Ochankwaghe, 1972, p.20)

Carettas - Carettas - 1996 - 12" x 15" - this one is sheer joy, wonderful placement and great positive and negative space. To date this my best selling print.

Image of marshp.jpg

Marsh-Pond - 1999 - 5.5" x 8.5" - okay this was my second landscape after the above -  I really like the vegetation - the swamp growths in their swirrls rock in this one !!!
